The construction guide from Carry Freedom shows a trailer built of bamboo for the obvious reasons. In the appendix, though, it lists other acceptable materials. In fact, any material that has the strength to haul the load you think should be hauled is probably sufficient.
I have chosen to use, for the first trailer, 2″ x 2″ lumber that was left over from other house projects. I did this because:
- The material was available and that seemed an appropriate expression of the philosophy or principles for this project
- The lumber chosen is sourced locally and not imported
- Joinery could be stronger and more elegant using lumber
- Installing a deck would be simplified using this type of material
Beyond these materials and suitable construction techniques, I am building this with the specified goods. Perhaps more experimentation with construction, particularly with bike-to-trailer connections, will be in order for the next one.
